Employment & training

Trafford Council works closely with partner organisations to provide you with any support you need in relation to staff recruitment and training. We can help with:

Staff recruitment

Trafford has a highly skilled workforce with over 43% of the population educated to degree level. We can help you find the right staff for your business. Using a local workforce will cut down on travelling times for staff and will boost company efficiency and productivity.

For further information contact the Economic Growth Team.

The Skills Gateway Service is a collaboration between Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Manchester Learning Provider Network. The service acts as a single point of contact for employers, where you can access a comprehensive catalogue of training provision and get support to find the most appropriate training for your business.

A wealth of training provision is available locally. Trafford College offers training courses to suit all levels across their sites in Trafford, and offers a service for employers. Visit the Trafford College website or call 0161 886 7070 for more information.

For a list of other training providers in the area, please visit the Trafford Family Service Directory.

An apprenticeship is a Government-sponsored programme that allows individuals to gain valuable skills and qualifications whilst at work. They are available at 3 levels - Intermediate (Level 2), Advanced (Level 3) and Higher (Level 4/5). Research has shown that apprentices add value to organisations by providing the flexibility to develop the skills, knowledge and experience of its workforce.

Trafford Council can assist you by linking you in with a recommended training provider to deliver the training and to identify enthusiastic young people to select as an apprentice to meet your individual unique needs.

Greater Manchester Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (GM AGE)

The Greater Manchester Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (GM AGE) supports GM businesses (employing less than 250 employees) to recruit individuals aged 16-24 into employment through the apprenticeship programme. The basic grant is £1,500 and is available to companies within the Greater Manchester boundary who haven't recruited an apprentice in the previous 12 months. Up to 3 GM AGE grants may be available to any employer meeting the eligibility criteria.

You can also apply for additional incentives, worth up to £1,000 each, if an apprentice is an existing trainee progressing from Traineeship to Apprenticeship and/or you are offering an Advanced or Higher Apprenticeship. If both conditions are met then you may be eligible for a total grant of £3,500.

GM AGE is available until December 2015, subject to budget availability. For further advice and information, employers can either contact their training provider or visit the National Apprenticeships website.

The Trafford Pledge

The Trafford Pledge matches job-seekers with local businesses, benefitting both the local community and the wider economy.

The Pledge was launched in April 2013 as the Partington Pledge, an initiative to support young people aged 16 to 24 into employment. Due to the success of the project, the borough-wide Trafford Pledge was launched in July 2014 and now supports residents of all ages to find employment.

Businesses can access a network of recruitment support and additional benefits by signing up to the Pledge.
