Stretford, with a population of approximately 35,000, is located at the northern end of Trafford on the main A56 corridor. It has a purpose built, covered shopping centre – Stretford Mall – which forms the core town centre area, bringing together key High Street names with regional and independent stores, offering a range of products and services and attracting over 80,000 visitors per week. There are also additional businesses, library facilities and parks close by. With frequent bus and Metrolink services and easy access by road, Stretford attracts visitors from outside the area as well as local residents.

Key Assets

  • The Bridgewater Canal is a major heritage and leisure attraction and links Stretford to the main waterway networks in the North West. The tow path has recently been widened and improved to encourage cycling.
  • Metrolink is one of the most successful (and still expanding) light rail systems in the UK, carrying around 30 million passengers every year. The Stretford tram stop is a short walk from the Mall.
  • Stretford Mall provides the retail core of the town centre and contains over 100 businesses.
  • 900 Car Parking spaces exist within the town centre.

Planned Developments

The Council has produced a Masterplan that provides a bold vision for delivering transformational change in Stretford Town Centre over 10 development sites. It provides a framework for the delivery of successful regeneration over the next 10 to 15 years with the ambition of creating a destination of choice for local people.

A public realm and movement strategy is currently being prepared to provide an enhanced public realm and physical environment, within the town centre. Funding has been ring-fenced for an initial phase and bids are being prepared to secure additional funding.

Stretford Panel

A public realm and movement strategy has been prepared to provide an enhanced public realm and physical environment, within the town centre.

The first phase of improvement works at the A56/Edge Lane Gateway are scheduled to start on site by early 2017. This includes removing three of the four subways. Detailed design works are underway and will take into account all responses received in the public consultation to date. There will be further consultation as this work progresses.

Town Centre Health

Number of properties - There are approximately 128 ground floor properties in Stretford town centre.

Multiple retailers - There is a strong offer of multiple retailers in Stretford town centre currently at around 70% of the businesses. This includes names such as Tesco, Aldi, JD Sports Iceland, Boots, TJ Hughes and Pure Gym..

Available Units – There is a good mix of available unit sizes to accommodate a variety of retail and leisure units. It is expected that planned openings, such as Pure Gym and a new supermarket will, increase footfall.

Car Parking

Parking provision – ample car parking is available for Stretford town centre. The majority is in private ownership within Stretford Mall but there is also a smaller number of Council owned parking spaces available on Lacy Street.
