Altrincham, with a population of approximately 75,000, is Trafford’s biggest town centre and has been a market town for centuries, combining a historic past with the convenience of modern pedestrianisation. It has an excellent array of specialist and independent businesses, key high street names and excellent eateries, attracting many visitors, during the day and evening. Altrincham is easily accessed by tram (Metrolink), rail, bus and car with the M56 motorway approximately two miles away. It has a large, day-time population of office employees.

Recent Investment / Planned Developments

Altair is an exciting new development situated in the heart of Altrincham, a historic market town, just 10 miles from Manchester. Delivered by Nikal, this modern, high quality scheme will bring new residential, commercial, leisure and retail space making a significant contribution to Trafford’s offer. The first phase of the proposed £70m scheme, on a site close to the Interchange, is due to start in Summer 2017.

The redevelopment of the old hospital site, within the Historic Market Quarter, will create a Health and Wellbeing Centre with an improved Library and public square and is due to be completed in 2018. This will complement the recent investment in refurbishing the historic Market House which was completed in 2014, providing a high quality food and drink offer.

Other recently completed schemes include a new £17m new state-of-the-art hospital, along with a £19m investment in Altrincham’s new Interchange. A sympathetic refurbishment of the historic Stamford House next to the Interchange offers ground floor retail units with high quality apartments on the upper floors.

The Altrincham Strategy

The Altrincham Strategy provides a framework for delivering the regeneration of Altrincham Town Centre and creating one of the best market towns in the country. The first phase of the public realm and environmental works (Cross Street, Shaws Road and Goose Green was completed in November 2015 and the second phase to refurbish Stamford New Road was completed in Spring 2017. Further phases are planned subject to funding. A strategy is also being prepared to identify improvements to car parking and signage.

Altrincham Unlimited

Local representative business and community organisations, residents and landowners, together with Trafford Council have created a new partnership for change. This will see £1.4m invested in the town centre over the next 5 years.

Vacancy rate – The current vacancy rate is 8.3%. The vacancy rate has fallen by 6% in the past year, with further falls likely as a result of increased retailer interest stimulated by recent development activity.
